Camellias

Camellias look exotic but are in fact very easy to grow! Abide by one or two ground rules and you will bound to have success!

Glossy dark evergreen leaves are the perfect background for the profusion of blooms that these hardy shrubs produce from just after Christmas through until April.

They grow well in shade but will tolerate full sun too.

Lime free soil or, at least soil that has a neutral pH [ideally no more than pH 7], gives best results but these make magnificent container plants where lime free Vital Earth Ericaceous compost is recommended.

Roots should never be allowed to dry out otherwise flowers buds may fall off prematurely and where possible rain water should preferably be used. An annual mulch of bark will help keep the roots moist and cool.

Camellia x williamsii varieties: the most reliable group which produces flower buds from the word 'go'! In fact even rooted cuttings will flower! Donation and Debbie [pictured] are especially recommended. These varieties tend to be taller but don't mind pruning.

Camellia japonica varieties: perhaps a little slower to start flowering but then with a greater colour range. Jury's Yellow [pictured], Adolphe Audusson [red], Ruby Wedding and Silver Anniversary are among the best sellers.
