Shallots

Shallots are a veg that you can actually get in the ground right now. They are extremely hardy and, even if the real winter does suddenly arrive, they will withstand freezing. In fact the old gardener’s adage was to plant them on the shortest day of the year and dig them on the longest! If your veg patch is still too wet or, worse still un-dug, then it will pay to plant your shallots into cell trays or modules and delay planting until the soil conditions improve. But when you do plant them avoid planting where you grew any other plants from the onion family last year [leeks, garlic and of course onions]. This will minimise the risk of disease infection but generally, shallots are less fussy to about this.

Don’t be tempted to plant onion sets [also in stock now] out yet as if you do plant too soon you run the risk of them bolting. That is they produce flowers and useless bulbs!

Chicken Manure Pellets: shallots and onions will benefit from plenty of plant food and chicken manure pellets has plenty of the nitrogen that they need.
